As Texas Basketball prepares for the start of the 2019-2020 season, images of a second Texas KD12 have surfaced. Kevin Durant’s close relationship with the University of Texas has always ensured that the Longhorn basketball squads are laced up with special colorways of KDs latest signature sneakers. But while past colorways of Texas KDs have often featured a combination of burnt orange, white, grey, and black, at least one of this year’s pairs looks to buck that trend by opting for brown as its primary color.
This new pair of UT KDs is certainly different then every pair of Texas sneakers that we’ve seen so far. The shoe most notably sports a solid brown upper, which is sure to be polarizing among Texas fans. A black tongue, black laces, and a translucent black outsole give this pair of Longhorn KD12s a much darker color scheme when compared to the first pair that was issued to the football team back in August. A white Nike Swoosh and white midsole add a touch of color to an otherwise very muted sneaker. Finally, the Longhorn logo is embossed on the lateral side of the heel, and is one of the few places on this Texas KD12 where UT’s signature color is featured.
While I initially wasn’t a fan of this new pair Texas KD12s, they’ve started to grow on me the more I look at them. In a similar vein to the Texas Pegasus 36s that dropped earlier this year, the dark colors on this pair would make them easy to wear in a variety of settings. While I will always be partial to burnt orange and overall prefer the first pair of Texas KD12s that were shown, I don’t dislike these as much as I thought I would. This would be an easy pickup from me should Nike chose to release them.
As is unfortunately the case with most Texas KDs, there has been no word on if these will see a public release. While I could see it happening, it has been almost three years since Nike officially made a Longhorns themed KD available for purchase. This drought will have to end at some point, but who can say whether it will be sooner rather than later?
What do you think of this new pair of Texas Longhorns KD12s? Do you prefer the original burnt orange colorway, or has this different take on a UT sneaker piqued your interest?
