It looks as though UT fans will have footwear options to spare when the Longhorns take the field for the 2023 football season. Images of not one, but two pairs of upcoming University of Texas shoes have surfaced online. The two potential UT affiliated offerings are the Nike Pegasus 40 and the Nike Air Max SYSTM. Should both of these models release in 2023, this would mark the first time since 2019 that multiple pairs of Longhorn branded sneakers have been sold to the public.

Pegasus 40 Colorway Breakdown

For the fifth year in a row, Nike will produce a Texas Longhorns colorway in its flagship running shoe line; the Nike Air Zoom Pegasus. The Swoosh seemed keen to stick with what worked on previous editions with this year’s UT Pegasus 40, as the shoe features a burnt orange upper similar to last year’s Peg 39s. Longhorn fans will likely be excited by the decision to stick with this traditional hue, as the UT 39s were one of best selling Texas shoes in recent memory. However, while last year’s shoe matched the school’s signature color with light grey accents, the Longhorn Pegasus 40s instead opt for black paired with a more prominent display of white. This slight switch up helps give the shoe a unique identity when compared to its predecessor.

School related branding is an essential component of any good UT shoe, and the Pegasus 40 “Texas” does not disappoint in this area. The word “Longhorns” is prominently featured on the tongue tag of each shoe, and a white Longhorn logo can be found on the lateral side of the heel. Each of the previous four UT Pegasus sported the steerhead in this same spot, so it is unsurprising to see this trend continue on the 40s. While they do not feature as much UT branding as some older Longhorn shoes, the Texas Pegasus 40s look to be a solid offering that fans everywhere will be proud to wear.

Air Max SYSTM Colorway Breakdown

When compared to the Pegasus 40s, the UT Air Max SYSTMS opt for a significantly different color scheme. While burnt orange is certainly visible throughout the colorway, it serves primarily as an accent on this pair of sneakers. Instead, grey and black cover the majority of these Texas Air Maxes, giving the shoes a more neutral appearance. Paired with a white midsole and gum outsole, these UT Air Max SYSTMs seem to be tailor-made for casual wear.

For branding, the sneakers notably feature the Longhorn steerhead on the tongue of each shoe. On the heel, the number”1883″ is stitched in burnt orange, paying homage to the year that the University of Texas was established. Finally, a small orange and white striped tab is attached to upper of the shoe. While seemingly insignificant, this tab is a clear reference to the two stripes found on the shoulders of UT’s iconic football jerseys. Overall, these Air Max SYSTMs keep it simple in terms of UT markings, and appear to be ideal for Longhorns fans that want to rep their school in a more understated way.

Potential Release Date and Price

Since these are leaked images, there is currently no official release date set for either upcoming Texas shoe. However, based on release pattern that previous UT sneakers have followed, I expect we’ll see at least one pair (likely the Pegasus 40) release in August, before the start of the 2023 football season. It will also be interesting to see if Nike choses to drop both shoes at the same time, or if they decide to spread the release dates out.

As for price, Longhorn fans can expect each shoe to retail for about $10 more than standard versions of their respective models. This would put the MSRP for the Air Max SYSTM at $110 and the Pegasus 40 at $140 before tax and shipping.

What are your thoughts on these two upcoming University of Texas shoes? Will you be picking up both pairs when they drop, or should Nike have gone a different direction with this year’s releases? Let me know your thoughts down in the comments, or join the conversation with other UT fans on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

UPDATE: Per the Hibbett Sports Launch Calendar, it appears as though the Texas Longhorns colorway of the Pegasus 40s will be releasing on 8/3 for $140. No updates on the Air Max SYSTM, but at this point I think it’s safe to assume that those will drop either in the middle or end of this year’s college football season.

    • Unfortunately there’s no release date set for either yet, but I expect at least one of them will drop in August. As soon as I learn more I’ll update this article and post about it on Twitter.

    • As of right now, neither of these shoes have been released yet. However, you should be able to buy a pair soon from Nike.com or the official Texas Team Shop!

    • According to the Hibbett Sports launch calendar, these should be coming out later this week on 8/3! There’s always a chance they could get pushed back, but the launch calendars are usually pretty accurate when it comes to things like this.

    • Early September looks to be the time frame, but still no exact date. The Oregon Ducks Twitter account shared earlier today that their Air Max SYSTM would be releasing then, so I bet we’ll see the UT pair come at the same time.
