For many Longhorn fans, one of the sacred rites of football season is the annual pre-season Nike X UT sneaker release. But while this type of release has historically be referred to as “Week Zero”, never has a shoe in this series actually dropped the week before game 1. That is, until now. Whether due the Swoosh wanting the shoe to stay close to it’s historical namesake or (more than likely) supply chain issues, the Texas Pegasus 38s have released just a mere 3 days before the season opener.
Now in it’s 8th iteration, Nike again tapped the legendary Air Pegasus line to be this year’s primary Texas-branded shoe. These 38s primarily feature an all-grey upper paired with burnt orange accents. While school specific branding is minimal, the Longhorn logo and UT’s famous “Hook’em Horns” motto appear on the the heel and tongue respectively. Other notable details include a burnt orange heel clip and a white outline of a Nike Swoosh, which appears on the lateral side of the upper. Overall, this pair of UT Pegasus 38s opt for a more neutral appearance when compared to other University of Texas sneakers.
Admittedly, I was bit skeptical when images of these first surfaced back in April. I felt that the grey looked a little too light, and that the lack of Texas branding on the shoe made them feel a bit boring. However, I’m happy to say that in-hand these look fantastic. While the lack of branding is still apparent, the shade of grey is much darker, which (at least to me) makes them much more wearable. This definitely feels like a shoe that I’ll be reaching for often on days when I don’t want to wear a predominantly burnt orange shoe (which are rare). While I don’t think that they’re the best “Week Zero” shoe we’ve gotten, the Pegasus 38s are certainly a strong contender for the second or third spot.
The Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 38 “Texas” is available now for $130. Additionally, while Nike released the previous two UT Pegasus in unisex sizing, these were technically only produced in Men’s sizes. To convert to your correct size in women’s, simply subtract 1.5 sizes from your regular women’s Nike size to get the corresponding men’s size (ex: women’s size 9 would convert to a men’s size 7.5) or check out this chart. See the links below for a list of sites that these can be purchased from.
