University of Texas Collaborates with Corona to Create 12 Pairs of Custom Nike Air Max 1s

Texas Longhorns X Corona Extra

To celebrate the partnership between the University of Texas and Corona, the latter has created 12 custom pairs of one of the most influential sneakers of all time: the Nike Air Max 1. Made by Jake Danklef of Dank & Co., these custom kicks feature design elements from both iconic brands, resulting in a sneaker that is incredibly unique. Although these Air Max 1s are customs and thus will not receive a full retail release, Corona is giving away 12 pairs via a special sweepstakes they are running.

While not the first pair of Texas X Corona sneakers customized by Dank & Co., these Air Max 1s certainly feel more Texas inspired than their predecessor. These custom kicks are predominately done up in white, sporting a white leather upper, white laces, and a white midsole. The mudguard, while normally leather, is made of a calfskin material, paying homage to real life Texas Longhorn cattle. It wouldn’t be a University of Texas sneaker without burnt orange, and these kicks feature the school’s primary color on the Swoosh, Nike Air logo, top eyelets, and tongue liner. The Longhorn logo is stitched on to the tongue of each shoe, rounding out a custom pair of sneakers that embody UT.

Details are often what makes a pair of customs truly special, and these UT Air Max 1s have them in spades. A small burnt orange tag with the Corona Logo interwoven in white can be found at the top of the toe box. On the inside of the tongue, a blue tag with the “Horns Up, Limes In” slogan celebrates the partnership between the University of Texas and Corona. Finally, when placed alongside one another the insoles form a picture of a beach, along with the beer brand’s famous “LA CERVEZA MAS FINA ” slogan. The sneakers also come in a custom designed box, which feature a beach print and mini basketball hoop.

The attention to detail, as well as the level of craftsmanship on this pair is top notch. There is just the right amount of Texas and Corona branding to make the sneaker feel special without going overboard. Although branding elements can sometimes make a shoe hard to pull off, these seem like they could easily be worn in a casual setting without to much difficulty.

While the use of animal printing on custom kicks can sometimes feel corny or unnecessary, that is not the case on with these Air Max 1s. The calfskin mudguard has an authentic connection to UT, and its implementation here looks great and really makes the shoe feel unique. Dank & Co. really hit it out of the park with this pair, and everything about these Texas Air Max 1s looks spot on.
