With the recent cold weather that has befallen the Austin area, I felt this would be a great time to take a look out one of the iciest cleats to ever be worn by the Texas Longhorns Football team; the Nike Vapor Untouchable.
The first installment of Nike’s now flagship speed cleat line, the Vapor Untouchable features a full Flyknit upper for a sock like one to one fit. Additionally, this upper is made of recycled polyester yarn which uses the equivalent of five recycled plastic bottles to produce. The Untouchable also features a carbon V plate for support and explosive responsiveness, which is a staple on Nike’s top end Vapor cleats. The cleat was initially revealed and showcased during the 2014 bowl season, and while Texas would wear a grey pair of Vapor Untouchables during the 2014 Texas Bowl against the Arkansas Razorbacks, it would not be until the start of the 2015 season that they would get a pair that was UT specific.
The Texas Longhorns colorway of the cleat sports an icy white upper with burnt orange accents. In fact, almost the entire cleat is white with the exception of the Nike Swooshes and stripes on the laces and heel pull tab, which are burnt orange. The insoles also reps the University of Texas, with “Hook’em” spelled out on the left insole and “Horns” written on the right. All in all these are a relatively simple but sharp pair of cleats that definitely paired well with UT’s “Stormtrooper” white away uniforms.
The Vapor Untouchables were worn by a number of Texas players during the 2015 Football season. Speed players such as defensive back Duke Thomas and wide receiver John Burt made use of this cleat en route to an unfortunate 5-7 record. Despite this, it was a season that was filled with exciting upsets over No. 12 ranked Baylor in Waco and No. 10 ranked Oklahoma in the Red River Showdown.
Most famously however, the Vapor Untouchable was the cleat worn by quarterback Jerrod Heard when he broke Vince Young’s single game record for total yards of offense. Heard accounted for 527 yards against Cal on September 20th, 2015, and led team on a furious 4th quarter comeback to bring the 21 point deficit down to just one. However, a missed PAT sealed a 45-44 loss for the Longhorns.. Regardless of the outcome of the game it remains one of the all-time great performances by Texas Longhorns football player, and it was all done in a pair of Vapor Untouchables.
