UT to Wear New Football Cleat Options for 2019 Road Games

Few college football teams have an away uniform as iconic as the University of Texas Longhorns. Sometimes refereed to as the “Stormtroopers” or “Icy Whites”, the all-white kit that UT dons for road games is a favorite among both players and fans. These jerseys are often paired with white gloves, white socks, and most importantly, white cleats. This season is no exception, and when the Longhorns compete in hostile environments away from Austin they will lace up all new colorways of Nike’s 2019 football cleat lineup.

This year’s team issued cleats sport a white upper paired with burnt orange accents. Similar to the Texas Pegasus 36s that released last July, UT’s “Hook’em” phrase appears on the insole of each cleat. While at first glance these appear to be almost identical to the cleats worn last season by the Horns, the difference lies in the details. Each cleat has subtle white Texas branding, with the word “Longhorns” appearing on the upper of the Vapor Untouchable Speed 3 and Vapor Untouchable Pro 3. In contrast, the Alpha Menace Pro 2, Alpha Menace Elite 2, and Force Savage Elite 2 have the Longhorn logo displayed on the strap. This year’s on-field footwear also features a white to burnt orange fade on each cleat’s plate, as opposed to the chrome plates that Texas cleats have sported during the past three seasons.

While not drastically different from other cleats from the last few years, I wholeheartedly approve of the changes made to make this new batch of cleats unique. The burnt orange chrome plate is my favorite feature on these new models, and while it will match well with the away jerseys I wish it would have covered the entire length of each plate. I’m also glad that Nike continues to keep UT’s cleat game fresh, despite the fact that the Longhorns now only wear player edition cleats during 6-7 games each season.
